How To Maintain Your Spa

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

In the early days, one had to travel far to go to a spa. With the increasing popularity and affordability of home spas, those days are over. Now you can have a spa right in the comfort of your own home. Manufacturing innovations have made home spas more portable and easier to install – the reason why millions of people all over the world are enjoying their health benefits.

But owning a spa carries some responsibilities. If you have one installed in your own home, don’t just leave it in a corner and use it whenever you want. Like a “pet”, it needs a little loving and caring otherwise it could give you trouble later. To make the most out of your investment and reap the full benefits of having a spa, be sure to keep these things in mind:

Check the water periodically and be on the lookout for dirt, grimy walls and unpleasant odors. Soaking in a dirty spa is a bad idea and can make you sick. High temperatures also promote the release of body oils and grease into the water. Change the water every three, four or six months depending on how dirty the water is.

Keep water temperature at 104 degrees Fahrenheit or below. The body can’t tolerate temperatures higher than that and you could suffer from a heat stroke. To check the temperature, use a thermometer.

Skin infections are also common with extended use. To play safe, don’t use your spa for more than 20 minutes a day. If you’re pregnant or elderly, consult a physician before using a spa. The same goes for kids.

Take a shower before taking a dip and don’t wear any lotion. This can make the water dirty or create foaming. The same is true with detergents that remain in swimsuits. To eliminate this problem, rinse your swim apparel carefully or go naked.

Ensure that your spa has circulating pumps to keep the water free from algae and other dirty substances. Use only cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer. Disinfect the water regularly to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. The amount of disinfectant you need depends on how often you use your spa.

The Perfect Vacation: Spa Retreats

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Tired of work, school or your everyday activities that may have you on edge? Then why not escape to your own private getaway with spa retreats offered by various full body spas across your area?

One of the biggest advantages to getting away at a local spa is that it relaxes you physically and mentally. We are all on our most productive behavior when we are fully alert and well rested. Any trip that allows you to pamper yourself and revitalize your core is of great benefit to your studies and even your job. When you feel good inside you are sure to show it outside.

Full body massages are one of the most popular features at spa retreats. The entire process of a full body massage is very easy and many would agree that it does not last long enough! The client disrobes and is only wearing a towel while relaxing on a very soft table, face down. The masseuse then begins to pour hot oil over the areas that need to be massaged and begins to knead away at the different muscles that appear tense. Usually the person starts on the shins and works their way up to the back, then the nape of the neck. The full body massages usually last around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on what spa package you get.

Another popular feature in any spa are their facials and other cosmetic procedures. A facial is designed to open up your pores and give you a smoother and clearer complexion than it was before you put the mask on. Most spa masks include organic and natural ingredients, like olive oil or even mud. The results vary by individual but they are always positive and beneficial to the skin.

One of the most recent trends to hit spas is hair styling and coloring. Usually a spa entailed things that needed to be done to the body, not so much the hair or anything cosmetology related. However, various waxing procedures, highlights, deep conditioning treatments and hair cuts are all offered in many spa retreats as of late. Another big trend that has hit the spa scene are “feather extensions.” These are real feathers placed in your hair with a small bead and they last several months. Many celebrities have sported this look and it has gained mass popularity in the accessory world.

Spa retreats may seem like a big indulgence in yourself, but you deserve it. You owe it to your body to take a break, even if it is just for an hour. The rejuvenating feeling you get after leaving your spa will be extremely beneficial to your attitude, and you will find that it is very much worth it.

Spa Cover Uses

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Consider that your new spa will most likely be sitting in a pretty area of the back yard that also has trees and birds flying around. This is because an uncovered spa will allow debris like bird droppings to fall into the tub and feed bacteria in the water. This is why you will need a durable tub cover to protect it as well as the people and animals from falling into the tub.

Debris and Weather Protection

If you have a spa cover and accidentally left it open after using the spa you certainly know what you will find next time you visit your spa. The water may be filled with leaf debris, dust, dirt and anything else that has deposited itself in your spa. Warm water not only attracts these debris but also provide a breeding ground for bacteria. This will also be impractical since cleaning and refilling it will definitely eat up lots of energy. If you didn’t purchase a spa cover when you got the spa you will wish you had done so. Having a tub cover will truly prevent you from experiencing these things.

Safety Precautions

If you have small children in your home or the neighbors do then hot tub spa covers are a necessity. A secure spa cover will always protect a child and even some adults from falling in and hurting themselves. This will eliminate accidents from happening in the tub. Spa covers are made so that little children who are curious enough will not be able to lift them as easily on their own. This is why a secure tub cover will definitely prevent small children from falling in.

How Do You Know a Cover is the Right One?

Spa covers come in variety of designs and features and your choice will depend on the tub’s location in the house. So you have a number of choices when looking for the right spa cover for your hot tub. Moreover, if there are little children in the house, a lighter indoor spa cover that may easily be lifted will still pose some risk to a curious child inside the house. A lighter cover will enable children to easily lift it and they could get hurt in the process. If there are children around then make sure you go for a bulkier weight spa cover.

Tub Covers of High Quality

When you look at a spa cover manufacturers you will find they have different model choices. If you have a tight budget and a childless household then perhaps the less expensive lightweight cover is the best choice for you. Make sure you have the right size or it won’t really do a lot to protect your tub and your kids. Don’t spend money on unbeneficial options either.

Spa Repair Part 2 Yuck The Water In My Spa Is Green

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Spa Repair – Part 2 – Yuck… The Water In My Spa Is Green…!

Most of us have a some point come down our spa, ready to use it, only to discover that the spa water is…green,..

Our gut reaction is to call our spa service company and let them know how incompetent they are and that it’s their fault…

But, most of the time that assumption is incorrect.

What is more likely to be going on is one of the following scenarios:

1. Your spa filters are dirty. When was the last time you took time to properly clean your filters? What happens it that a dirty filter impedes the water circulation. Poor water circulation affects how clean a spa is. Remedy: Every month you should remove your spa filters, clean them out with a garden hose, or, if they are in a really bad shape, clean them with a Spa Filter Cleaning Solution. This will in most situations clear up the spa water. If the filter are more than 6 months old, it is time to replace them

2. Your water chemistry is off! There are basically two things you have to be aware of in spa chemistry (I know there are more but if you get these two right, the rest follows easily). The first one is the pH of the water. The second one is the level of Chlorine (or whatever other sanitizer you are using) in the water. In the simplest version, the pH is for the spa and the spa equipment and the Chlorine if for you. The Chlorine keeps the water sanitized and healthy. The correct pH ensure that the water has the optimal balance between acidity and alkalinity. If your level of Chlorine is to low for a length of time, the water will turn green (=algee). So, if your spa water is green, check the chemical levels and ensure that they are correct.

3. Your circulation pump is not working. No circulation = green water (eventually). There are several reasons why your circulation pump is not working. A- It’s broken. You need to call a spa service technician to diagnose it. B- The power to the spa has been turned off or have tripped off for some reason. When it comes to troubleshoot an electrical problem, it is most of the time better to call you spa repair company and allow a skilled technician to trouble shoot it. The risk of a home owner getting hurt when troubleshooting an electrical problem is great.

If the problem with your water persists, call your spa repair company. Pay them for a service call, typically between $95 and $135 to diagnose the problem.

Bestway Lay-z-spa Review

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

If you’ve ever dreamed about owning a Hot Tub but were put off by the thought of costly installations and the space it would take up then the Bestway Lay-Z-Spa could be the solution to your problem.

The Lay-Z-Spa is made of plastic and is inflatable with air thus giving you the convenience of being able to set it up whenever you need it and deflate it when you don’t need it. It has many features of a regular spa such as a rapid heating system but at a lower price with the added advantage of being portable.

Features of the Bestway Lay-Z-Spa

- Compact and inflatable spa
- Easy Set up
- Water filtration System with 80+ micro air jets
- Rapid Heating System
- Plugs into standard USA 110 volts power outlet
- Includes instructional and maintenance DVD

Easy Set up

Setting up the Spa is straightforward; no tools are required and set up takes approximately 15 minutes. The Spa plugs into a standard 110 volts power outlet so powering your spa is hassle free. A DVD is included which guides you through the whole set up process.

Compact and Inflatable

If you want a Spa which can be used in different locations then the Lay-Z-Spa is ideal. The Spa is made of plastic material which is inflated with air then the tub is filled with water so it’s a true plug-in-play solution.

Cost Effective

One of the most appealing aspects of the Lay-Z-Spa is the low price. Despite the low cost, Bestway hasn’t skimped on features; they’ve included many features you’ll find in more higher priced spa’s.

If you can’t afford a permanent Spa or having such a Spa isn’t suitable for your living arrangements then this is likely to suit you down to a tee.

Water Filtration System

The Spa features a water filtration system which includes replaceable water filtration cartridges. When ordering the Spa, I recommend ordering a package of filters also as you will need to change the filter after around 1 week as they need changing frequently to get the impurities out of the water.

Rapid Heating System

The Heating System used in the Lay-Z-Spa is quite impressive. The Rapid Heating system increases the temperature by two degrees per hour and allows temperatures to reach up to 40-degrees C. I found it took quite a while to heat up initially but adding warm water increases the speed the water heats up significantly.

Final Thoughts

The Bestway Lay-Z-Spa is a great little spa for the money. No expensive electrical and plumbing work is required. The stand out feature for me is the possibility to carry it anywhere so you can deflate it for the winter or taking it with you when you move house. On the downside, the pump is rather noisy but this doesn’t have to be used at all times.

This Spa will provide many fun days in the summer and you can even take it inside for the winter to enjoy all year round.

A Spa Director’s Wish List: The Anatomy Of A Perfect Spa

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

We’ve all played that game of…what would I do if I won the lottery, right? We’d all buy a fancy new sports car, that big mansion in a gated community, and take an extravagant vacation to some far off, exotic locations, right? Well, spa directors play that game too, but it’s called…what would I do if I had the perfect spa facility? What would it look like? What kinds of treatments would be offered? What would the people be like who worked there? These are the kinds of things spa directors’ dream of, so let’s take a look at what the perfect spa facility would look like from the point of view of the spa director.

What would the spa look like? While there are small day spas and large day spas, size doesn’t really matter as long as you have all of the essential elements, no matter what size building the spa happens to be in. People go to a day spa to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation from their busy daily lives. So, the first thing that a day spa should offer is a comfortable and quiet location for people to truly be able to take a break and enjoy some soothing “me” time. This means having light and airy colors painted on the walls, perhaps even some murals that bring to mind the feeling of being on an exotic tropical island resort or a quiet country estate. The lights should be soft and dim to create an atmosphere of calm. Each room would have lots of very comfortable, cozy chairs, perhaps with lots of pillows or overstuffed cushions. From the moment you walked into this “perfect” spa, it would feel inviting, relaxing, and create the impression that the worries and problems of the outside world no longer exist.

The reception area should be warm and welcoming and would almost pull the clients in and make them feel like they belong there. There would be plenty of private spa treatment rooms where clients could really focus on the work being done and easily drift away into that Shangri-La that only a great full-body massage can bring. Let’s not forget about the locker rooms either. This often overlooked detail is very important for clients who want to be able to fully relax knowing that they can undress in privacy while also being able to store their important belongings in a safe and secure locker. The dressing rooms would have individual showers, plenty of fresh towels, personal robes and slippers, and it would be obsessively cleaned at all times. While this doesn’t seem like the most glamorous part of the spa, never underestimate the importance of clean toilets!

There would also be large rooms for groups to enjoy their rejuvenating treatments together, the perfect spot for bridal parties or baby showers to be held. There might even be a special couple’s room that could help reignite passions and reconnect couples who are looking for a very special and very romantic spa experience together. The relaxation room would provide several relaxing lounge chairs, soft music, aromatherapy candles, and herbal teas for clients to just “chill” in before and after their spa treatments.

Speaking of the treatments, the best day spas offer a wide variety of treatments that appeal to a wide range of people with varying interests and tastes. The perfect spa would, of course, provide the classic treatments that have made day spas so successful. This would include therapeutic massages, facials, sea salt body rubs, detoxifying body wraps, and even manicures and pedicures. The spa would also provide some more exotic or treatments for those who want to take a walk on the wild side and experience something incredibly relaxing, yet uniquely different. This might include hot stone massage, reflexology, Thai massage, Watsu, or yogalates. If there was enough space in the spa director’s perfect spa, there would also be a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, and perhaps even a lap pool!

What about the people who work at the spa? What would they be like? The perfectly designed spa would be nothing without the perfectly selected spa employees to run it. The receptionist would have to be a master of customer service relations. Whenever you’re dealing with the public, you have to remember that the world is full of all kinds of people with all kinds of needs. It takes a professional who is knowledgeable in all aspects of the spa’s services and able to communicate with clients in a friendly and respectful way. The therapists and aestheticians would need to be highly trained professionals who are experts in their field of therapy. Clients know a fake when they see one, so having a staff that is highly trained in their particular specialty is essential to any spa’s overall success. Finally, the spa management staff would need to be educated, experienced, and talented leaders who love the spa industry and all that it has to offer. They would be great business people, love working with the public, and enjoy the ever-changing challenges that working in the perfect day spa would provide.

While these spa fantasies might sound like a dream, they’re all perfectly within reach for any day spa director to attain. The spa industry is built on making people’s dreams come true, so creating the perfect day spa should be a snap for any talented spa director. A relaxing atmosphere, comfortable rooms, exciting and effective treatments, and a warm and friendly staff are all things that every spa director should shoot for in their own spas. So, dare to dream the impossible dream and make your spa the perfect spa!
